Emerging Trends Amongst Seniors and Disability Sectors | Understanding the Status of Visitable Housing in Canada | Winnipeg Foundation

Emerging Trends Amongst Seniors and Disability Sectors: From Wisdom and Lessons to New Ideas
Funding: New Horizons
March 2006 to December 2006

This project served as a pilot to begin the discussion between the groups in Manitoba, to identify gaps, and to begin to develop strategies and tools to strengthen the seniors and disability communities' capacity to respond to common issues and emerging challenges. Areas that we were particularly interested in were:

  • Cross-over issues that are occurring with seniors with disabilities (the intersection population)
  • Parallel issues that sectors separately discuss
  • Transitional issues as a person with a disability moves from the “adult with disability services” to “seniors services.

Understanding the Status of Visitable Housing in Canada Project

Funding: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Government of Manitoba, Department of Housing and Family Services

August 2006 to August 2007

The purpose of this project was to determine the impact of visitability on communities. This project will be a major step forward in creating inclusive and livable communities.

The project focuses on Canada to discover where visitability initiatives are taking place and what factors are facilitating its growth or are creating barriers to implementation.

The three minimum guidelines to achieve visitability ensure that everyone regardless of mobility will be able to at least visit someone else's home, use the washroom and exit the home.
